Fishing in Carlow

The Barrow is renowned as a game and coarse angling river for salmon, brown trout, roach, rudd, pike, perch and tench with easy access to all parts of the river from the Barrow footpath.  The salmon and trout fishing season on the River Barrow commences in January and runs to the end of September. Good trout fishing can be enjoyed at a number of locations on the river and its tributaries.

Flowing through a picturesque valley the River Barrow has a moderate to fast flow. Good Pike can be found from Bagnalstown all the way down to the waters at St. Mullins. Below Borris at Clashganny you can catch Bream, Tench, Rudd, Hybrids, Perch and Pike. The quiet canal waters at Tinnahinch you can see Rudd and Tench.

The Barrow is a mixed fishery also with Salmon and Trout being caught. Bream fishing is best between April and October. The east bank above Carlow, near the bacon factory stretch gives good catches of Bream an Rudd feed freely in the summer months. Tench is best in May and June. Pike fishing is good all year around.

With the water stretching about 120 miles long, the Barrow drains a huge area which consists of mountain, bog, pastureland and tillage farming. The Salmon fishing is regarded as poor here, and catches are mostly of Grilse which are taken during the summer. Brown trout fishing is excellent with catches weighing from 0.5 lbs to 1.25 lbs depending on the area.
